Our Community

Colleton County School District (CCSD) is located in rural South Carolina about 40 miles from Charleston, 65 miles north of Savannah and 90 miles from Columbia. Living in Colleton County offers residents the benefits of small-town living as well as easy access to urban amenities. The county, which has a population of approximately 36,800 people, is rich in history, surrounded by national and state parks, and offers a multitude of year-round outdoor recreational activities on nearby rivers, lakes and beaches. At its heart is the ACE Basin, known as “one of the last great places” on Earth, which preserves 350,000 acres of undeveloped marshes, wetlands, hardwood forests, and riverine systems. Walterboro, the county seat, is home to the Walterboro Wildlife Sanctuary, the Tuskegee Airman Monument and a quaint downtown area filled with shops and restaurants.

Our District

Colleton County School District is one of the most diverse districts in South Carolina, providing quality education to over 5,000 students spread across six elementary schools, one middle school, one high school, a technical school, an adult education program and an alternative program. Our district’s top priority is making sure our students are ready to compete in a 21st century workforce. CCSD was the first school district in the southeast to have New Tech Network implemented in all grade levels, allowing our students to explore STEM and health-related careers. In 2019, the district received grants to establish afterschool robotics programs at all of our elementary schools, and the student robotics program at Colleton County Middle School qualified to attend state-level robotics competitions. Through partnerships with state and community colleges, our high school students have the opportunity to graduate with associate’s degrees already in hand. Our 2020 graduating class earned over $12 million in scholarship funds.

Another focus for CCSD is investing in quality teacher recruitment and their well-being. We participate in the University of South Carolina’s Transition to Teaching Residency program, encouraging and preparing college graduates to teach in our elementary and middle schools. We continue to help our teachers feel appreciated and supported for long after their initial hiring through multiple programs and school-level initiatives. For example, Cottageville Elementary School has made teacher and student health a top priority by encouraging participation in school running clubs, health and fitness challenges, and offering healthy foods, ultimately being awarded a National Healthy School Award from the Alliance for a Healthier Generation as a result of these programs.

Lastly, our district encourages a love of the arts in all students. Colleton County High School’s “Band of Blue” Marching Band has won the South Carolina State Marching Band Championships nine times and performed during presidential inaugurations, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and the 2019 Cherry Blossom Festival. The CCHS Chorus presents a musical every spring semester and has performed in Carnegie Hall in New York City.

Colleton County School District is a small-town school system with a drive for innovation, high student achievement, teacher development and the creative arts. Please join us and help us prepare all of our students today for tomorrow!
