McKinney Vento-Homeless Act

The McKinney-Vento Education for Homeless Children and Youth (McKinney-Vento) program is authorized under Title VII-B of the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, most recently re-authorized December 2015 by the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).   The McKinney Vento Program paves the way to ensure that students experience easier experience transitions,  can stay in school, have fewer obstacles for enrollment, and have full access to the education they deserve.


Who can be served?

  • share the housing of other persons due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or a similar reason  (referred to as “doubled-up”);
  • live in motels, hotels, trailer parks, or camping grounds due to lack of adequate alternative accommodations;
  • live in emergency or transitional shelters;
  • are abandoned in hospitals;
  • have a primary nighttime residence that is a public or private place not designed for, or ordinarily used as, regular sleeping accommodation for human beings;
  • live in cars, parks, public spaces, abandoned buildings, substandard housing (e.g., housing that lacks any one of the fundamental utilities, does not have working water, a kitchen or plumbing, is overcrowded, or infested),  bus or train stations, or similar settings;
  •  Migratory children qualify as homeless because they are living in the circumstances described above.
  • Unaccompanied youth who qualify as homeless because they are living in the circumstances described above

You have the right to:

  • go to school, no matter where you live or how long you have lived there
  • continue in the school you attended before you became homeless or the school you last attended
  • receive transportation to the school you attended before you became homeless
  • enroll in school without giving a permanent address
  • enroll and attend classes while the school arranges for the transfer of school records and/or immunization records.

Assistance under McKinney-Vento

If your family lives in any of the above conditions, you may be eligible for some assistance under the McKinney-Vento Act.  Our district Homeless Liaison can assist in determining your eligibility for our programsOur office coordinates services to eliminate barriers to school enrollment and attendance.  Enrolled students will receive transportation, meals, and assistance with school uniforms, school supplies, and related materials on an as-needed basis.
