Colleton
County is situated in the southeastern portion of the state of
South Carolina
about 40 miles from
Charleston and 65 miles north of
Savannah, Georgia. The county's 1049 square mile area is bordered by the
beautiful Edisto and
Combahee rivers which flow into St. Helena Sound. Edisto Beach was annexed
into the county in March, 1975. The area's population is approximately 36,800.
The city of Walterboro is a major stop on Interstate 95, the most important
north-south corridor for the eastern United States. Interstate 26, which
connects Charleston and Asheville,
North Carolina, is only 32 miles away, and these two interstate highways allow
convenient access to the entire Southeast. The city's retail trade facilities
and support services are more than adequate. A wide range of goods and general
merchandise are available to resident consumers in the central business
district, located in the heart of Walterboro, as well as in two conveniently
located shopping centers. The city of Walterboro has well-equipped police and
fire departments and excellent medical services. Award winning Colleton Regional
Hospital is located within the city limits of Walterboro. In addition, the
Veterans Hospital, Roper Medical Center, and the
Medical University Hospital, located in nearby Charleston, offer the most
advanced medical treatment in the country. Because of the moderate-mild climate,
the people of Colleton County enjoy
outdoor sports and
activities throughout the entire year. The land surrounding the city is
blessed with forests and vast quantities of water, providing some of the best
hunting and fishing to be found anywhere in the U.S. The Walterboro-Colleton
Recreation Commission and Arts Council offer a wide variety of activities
ranging from cultural arts to athletics for all members of the community. The
Rice Festival, South Carolina Artisans Center, and historical sites attract many
visitors to the area annually. Other attractions include The ACE Basin, Bear
Island, and Edisto Beach.
